Who We Are

Based in Tasmania, the core of Zephyr is a team of renewable energy professionals who have worked together on multiple projects. Frustrated with the inefficiencies in the traditional development model, the team formed Zephyr and a radically different method for developing renewable energy.

The Zephyr team has over 150 years of combined renewable energy experience, gained in both the regulatory and commercial sectors and spanning the entire project life cycle from greenfield development to operations. Zephyr has the experience, the connections and the vision to change the way renewable energy projects are developed in Australia.

What We Do

Zephyr works across multiple regions in Australia, searching out opportunities where there are markets for additional energy and where infrastructure for transmission of energy already exists. We enable reliable delivery of clean energy by using a combination of wind, solar and storage options in our projects.

Our project portfolio allows us to capitalise on economies of scale while minimising the time and expense inherent in most large renewable projects. We are able to get projects built faster and for less cost than similar projects.

Our Story

Zephyr Energy Developments is building a portfolio of renewable energy assets using a model vastly different to the current ‘bigger is better’ model followed in Australia. Matching individual project capacity to local demand and avoiding network augmentation to minimise cost of energy to the consumer, we have developed significant cost and revenue benefits which lift expected returns above our peers.

In most renewable developments, a project is onsold to new developers/owners at the end of each phase. The continual management changes result in significant process inefficiencies and additional expense. Each developer is concerned only with planning to the point of sale. Additionally, in an attempt to cut costs, limited studies are carried out in the prospecting and pre-feasibility stages, increasing risk in later stages.

Zephyr intends to develop projects from prospecting through to operations. This enables us to minimise risk early on by conducting thorough resource mapping, grid assessment and community engagement. We are able to predict site suitability and appropriately scale our projects to match grid requirements and anticipate need.

Moreover, as we will be building the site, we are able to progress into project design and pre-construction planning much earlier than companies which sell after a D.A. is approved. This enables Zephyr to begin building a project immediately after D.A. approval; a time where projects can stall for years looking for a buyer and construction finance.

Zephyr has it’s own consultancy arm, which enables us to manage our own developments and EPC contracts while maintaining contact and currency with the broader industry. The end result is a project with a streamlined development process, carrying less risk and incurring lower costs than those developed in the traditional model.

Our Model

A fully integrated, greenfield through operations model which capitalises on innovative use of technology, decades of experience and industry connections to refine site selection and streamline the entire process from the Pre Feasability stage through Construction and Operation.

Disruptive Technology

Our groundbreaking numeric weather prediction (NWP) model and innovative use of GIS technology coupled with aircraft or UAV borne sensors en- ables intelligent site selection, improved design and more efficient process of development. Implementation of Command and Control (C2) technology enables highly efficient installation and operations. These efficiencies allow our returns to be significantly higher than comparably sized projects.

Full Lifecycle Ownership
Maintaining ownership of the project throughout its entire lifecycle enables us to minimise risk of infeasibility early on by commencing Geographic Information system (GIS) studies and Weather Modelling at a much earlier stage than most developers. This avoids the risk of projects proving infeasible after significant expenses have already been incurred. It enables us to develop renewable energy for less risk and at a lower cost than other developers.
Total Resource Capture
Zephyr views all available resources on a site from 200m above the ground to below ground level. We aim to capture all available power generation re- sources on a given site. Use of wind, solar and/or pumped storage in a single project provides greater reliability and allows us to contribute renewable energy to the grid as needed

Zephyr executives and managers have over 150 years of combined experience in the regulatory, construction and commercial sectors of the renew- able energy industry. This experience has enabled unique relationships with support industries and specialist consultants. These relationships enable Zephyr to deliver results unique in the industry.
Intelligent site selection
Zephyr selects its sites with an eye to exploiting opportunities on the distribution and transmission network. We avoid the costs of network augmentation by T-ing into existing infrastructure while our GIS and weather prediction innovations enable us to pinpoint the best sites for development taking into account geography, available resource, local power requirements and connectivity.
Project Portfolio

Developing groups of smaller projects (<30 MW) located within the same region allows us to minimise the regulatory requirements required by larger projects and get projects up and running quickly. The smaller developments are more easily accepted by communities and less likely to experience the delays caused by significant opposition. Moreover, the connected projects allow for overall economies of scale to be unaffected. Zephyr is seeking to generate 1GW of electricity within the next 4 years, directly to the grid at market prices.
